Hi! This website documents the genealogy of the McNaughton family, John (Jock) and Annie, and their children Ron and Ian.
In brief
As far back as the 1600’s, the various branches of what became the McNaughton family lived in Aberdeenshire in Scotland – generally in the countryside, but towards the end of the nineteenth century many in this branch of the family had found their way to the city of Aberdeen.
From there, Jock emigrated to Australia with Annie emigrating a decade later, while others in the family made their way to the USA.
What you can find here
This site contains (or will in the future when it’s completed):
- family tree charts for Annie and for Jock, showing all ancestors I have been able to find (so far),
- a brief narrative of the history of Jock and Annie’s ancestors,
- profiles of those in the direct line, including a few interesting characters – there is even a Mr Bean (see if you can spot him),
- photographs of the family and places where they lived are included on other pages,
- a map of the area, information about locations, and a series of maps showing where they lived and moved over a century,
- some historical information on life in Aberdeenshire and Scotland in the 18th and 19th centuries,
- some information on tracing family history, where I obtained the information, and some of the tricky problems I had to solve, and
- a blog into which I will occasionally post about updated information on the site (you can receive email notifications of new information via the button on the right).
A full, interactive, family history record is on Ancestry.com, and can be viewed by any visitors to that site.
Enjoy!
Please check out the information if you are a family member or have some ancestors in common, or even if you are just interested in history generally. If you have any information to add, please email me using the form on the About Page.
We have Ann Shepherd b. 1824 in Kinellar , Aberdeenshire . Daughter of Alexander Shepherd and Margret Stephen.
Hi Betty, both Shepherd and Stephen are names in this family tree, but I haven’t been able to see a definite connection. Have you? Specifically, there is an Annie Shepherd Gibb b1871 who married Thomas Stephen in 1891, but she is much too late, and her parents were Daniel Gibb and Christian Robertson. It may just be a coincidence, but it is intriguing.
Hello Betty, I too have a connection to Alexander Shepherd and Margaret Stephen of Kinellar, via their son Alexander b. 1822. The earliest reference I have to them is their marriage at Kintore, 3 miles away, in 1813. First 3 children also baptised at Kintore before they moved to Kinellar approx 1820. Do you have any more information on them?
I am a descendant of the McNaughton’s and we have our family crest here in California. I was interested to look at the family tree to see where we finally came into play…
Hi Judy, that’s great! Did you work it out? I’d be interested to hear where you fit, or else to see if we can work on it together. If you want to do that privately, there is an email form on this site.
Hi, I’m looking for any information on Robert McNaughton born abt 1814, and died in Victoria, Australia.
On his marriage certificate to Margaret Brown he was McNaughton, however his name had changed when his children were born and when he died he was buried as McNaught.
Hi, I don’t think I can help you, I’m sorry. There don’t appear to be any Robert McNaughton’s in this family.
Around 1814, these McNaughtons were living in Aberdeenshire, near Ballater (parish of Glenmuich). Peter Noughty (later recorded as McNaughton) and Margaret Watt had four children that I know about, born over the period 1795-1803. It seems unlikely that either Peter or one of his children could father Robert in 1814, though I suppose it is possible.
If you have a marriage certificate, I presume you know where he lived. If it wasn’t near Ballater, then it probably wasn’t from this McNaughton family, I’m sorry.
I hope you are able to find out more. Scotland’s People is a very good website, and documentation is very cheap.
